Squadron - Operations Record Book

1943
Each
RAF Squadron complied a daily diary of events known as the RAF Form
540 "Summary of Events". This normally consisted of weather
reports, crews posted in and out, very basic operation details and
training activities. As such they are a very important historical
account of squadron day to day life.
Complementing this was RAF Form 541 "Detail of Work Carried Out",
which was a detailed account of each operation. This consisted of
target, crew details, bomb loads and operation information gathered
from the crews.
I have literally typed in what was on the printed forms and apart
from obvious spelling mistakes - this is how they were. I suspect
there are many errors especially where crew names are concerned. I
am not sure whether to leave the errors or to correct them.
At the head of each operation I have added some extra information
regarding the total Bomber Command effort for that raid.

expert. A lecture on Fighter Tactics was also given by a representative

but were cancelled at 1730 hours. |

AYLARD and crew posted from 1656 CU., P/O O.G. LIGHTON and crew

to air bombers by the Squadron Bombing Leader. Operations were ordered
for 25 aircraft but were cancelled at 2145 hours. |

GARDINER: F/O FORD: F/LT FAWCETT: S/LDR SLADE: W/O GILLMAN: F/LT
DOEL: F/O McLAUGHLIN: SGT FORBES: F/SGT

The remaining aircraft returned safely, but SGT NEWMAN mid upper
gunner in SGT SARGENT's aircraft received slight injuries from a
small piece of flak which hit his turret; he was admitted to hospital. |

L.W. ASPDEN & SGT W. PATTERSON. 2 details of practice bombing
carried out at Hamilton Hill during the day. Squadron was stood
down from operations, but at night 3 aircraft carried out Bullseye
training. One of these aircraft, Lancaster W4374 captained by SGT
J.B. LINDUP crashed 3 miles SSE of the aerodrome at 0435 hours on
return. SGT LINDUP, SGT E. SALMERS: SGT J.G. LEWIS AND SGT E. LAX
being killed. SGT R.A. COLLINS: SGT C.B. ANDERSON & SGT F. MILLS
were injured and admitted to hospital at Lincoln. The aircraft was
wrecked and extensively burnt. |

LA PALLICE area. Captains were SGT HOPTON: P/O LIGHTON and SGT
JEFFRIES. All aircraft returned successfully from this operation. |

of fires below cloud was seen on the way home as far as the coast
and it was apparently increasing. Nickels dropped. Very easy trip
by comparison with the Ruhr trip. |
